Nadine Shah grew up in Whitburn, a stones throw from my hometown, Newcastle Upon Tyne – her ancestral heritage stemming from Norway and Pakistan.
She’s been pigeonholed – as we like to do, with the likes of Nick Cave’s/PJ Harvey’s darkness. I think it all has to do with the deep, sultry, K.D. Lang like operatic tones she produces. If her voice was an octave higher would we compare her to Dolly Parton, I wonder.
Anyway she’s brilliant, her stars is perfectly alligned for a big career and if you like the music of Heartless Bastards, Maria Callas, K. D. Lang and many more you should give her a listen and judge for yourselves. Her Debut Album Love Your Dum And Mad is out now on Rough Trade. And its 14 perfect songs are a tribute to her taking her time to produce such a first good body of work.
